Escape with us on the exclusive Visionaries of the Vine: Celebrating Female Winemakers in Southern Rhône. Hosted by Oregon winemaker Meg Rulli of Flipturn Cellars, experience an extraordinary wine exploration through the south of France, a region that is near and dear to her heart.

As a female winemaker, Meg is keen on including as many wineries as possible on her trip which are also run by women. We will be adding to the list of visits as the departure date gets closer and you will be receiving updated information on all of the wineries once they are confirmed. For now, take a look at the day-by-day itinerary for a preview of some of the wineries you’ll be visiting.

This trip of a lifetime takes place May 18-25th, 2025, beginning in Cassis, a hidden gem nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Calanques cliffs. The area offers stunning landscapes and historic charm. After indulging in the crisp whites of Cassis, we will move on to the bold reds of the Bandol wine region, Provence rosés, and Southern Rhône’s robust reds. This broad array of wine styles and scenic landscapes makes them must-visit destinations for any wine lover.

Day 1 – May 18, 2025
Arrive in Cassis, France

Upon arriving at Marseille airport or train station, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Cassis. The scenic drive offers a preview of the stunning Provençal landscape. Once in Cassis, you will check in to Hotel Liautaud, a 4-star boutique hotel that just completed a full renovation in July 2024. Located on the bustling harbor, this hotel provides an idyllic escape where guests can immerse themselves in the Provençal culture.

After settling in, we will take a guided stroll through the charming village of Cassis, wandering its quaint streets and soaking in its unique ambiance. Before our included dinner, join us for an aperitif, setting the tone for your extraordinary experience ahead and offering a chance to unwind and mingle with fellow travelers.

 

Day 2 – May 19, 2025
Bandol Wine Region

Begin your day with a scenic 35-minute drive to the renowned vineyards of Bandol. Your first stop is a visit and wine tasting at a distinguished family-owned estate, such as Bunan, Terrebrune, La Suffrène, Ray Jane, Pibarnon, or Tempier. Savor the unique flavors and rich heritage of Bandol wines.

Afterward, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the village, exploring artists’ studios and art galleries, and immersing yourself in the local culture and creativity. You will be treated to a delightful lunch in the authentic medieval village of Le Castellet. Relish the local Provençal cuisine at a charming restaurant, surrounded by historic stone buildings and picturesque views that transport you back in time. Continue your wine adventure with an afternoon visit and tasting at another esteemed family-owned estate in Bandol.

Following this, explore the charming Bandol city center, soaking in its vibrant atmosphere, and visiting its unique shops, cozy cafés, and historic sites. Return to your hotel to relax and refresh.

For dinner, enjoy a meal at one of the recommended local restaurants, where you can further explore the rich culinary traditions of the region at your own pace.

 

Day 3 – May 20, 2025
Cassis Exploration

Start your day with a rendezvous with your nature guide to explore the breathtaking Calanques of Cassis. Embark on a hike offering stunning sea views, immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the region.

For those seeking a bit more excitement, there’s an option to kayak in the Calanques, adding an adventurous twist to your morning. (Reservations for kayaking will be taken closer to departure date. This will be at an additional cost.)

Savor a delicious lunch nearby, sampling the flavors of the region, all included. Visit one of the esteemed family-owned wine estates in Cassis, such as Dona Tigana, Clos Saint Magdeleine, Domaine du Paternel, Domaine Barbanau, or Château de Rochefort, for a wine tasting session. Delve into the exquisite local wines and learn about the unique characteristics that make Cassis wines so special.

Next, visit a local olive oil estate to uncover the secrets of olive oil production. Tour the estate and participate in a tasting session, where you can experience the rich flavors and learn about the meticulous process behind creating high-quality olive oil. Return to your hotel to relax and refresh.

Day 4 – May 21, 2025
Gastronomic Day in Provence

Kickstart your day with an early checkout from your hotel and set off on a picturesque one-hour drive to Aix-en-Provence. Upon arrival, immerse yourself in the vibrant markets and quaint foodie shops, capturing the essence of this cultural haven.

The late morning presents a delightful cooking class with a local chef, blending cultural discovery with gourmet experiences. Savor lunch with the chef, perfectly paired with local wines, turning your culinary exploration into a feast for the senses.

On your way to Avignon, pause for a visit and tasting at a charming family-owned wine estate. Relish the unique flavors and stories behind each bottle, enriching your journey with every sip.

Check into the prestigious Hotel de l’Europe in Avignon, nestled in a beautifully restored 16th-century mansion inside the city wall, offering a perfect blend of luxury and historical charm. Join a guided visit of Avignon, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere where history, culture, and culinary excellence converge. Wander through the lively streets, taking in the mix of modern shops and historic architecture, each step revealing the city’s enchanting allure.

Wrap up your day with dinner on your own at one of the recommended restaurants, savoring the local culinary delights and reflecting on the day’s rich experiences.

 

Day 5 – May 22, 2025
Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Tavel Appellations

You will head to Châteauneuf-du-Pape and start your day with a guided stroll through the historic village, renowned for its rich wine heritage and picturesque landscapes.

Immerse yourself in the local culture and history as you explore its charming streets and landmarks. Continue your morning with a visit to a family-owned wine estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Enjoy an informative tour of the vineyard and cellar, followed by a tasting session where you can savor some of the finest wines produced in this prestigious appellation.

Lunch is included and will be at one of wine estates or in a restaurant. Begin your afternoon with a visit to a family-owned Chocolaterie. Engage in a unique wine and chocolate pairing workshop, where you’ll learn about the art of combining these two delights.

Then head to Tavel for an exploration of this renowned wine region, known for its exquisite Rosés. Visit of Château Boucarut followed by a tasting in the historic chapel. Discover the nuances of their exceptional wines and the passion that goes into their production.

We’ll wrap the evening up by heading back to your hotel and having dinner on your own in one of the recommended restaurants.

 

Day 6 – May 23, 2025
Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise Appellations

This morning your will drive to a charming village of Gigondas, about a 30-minute drive from your hotel. We are planning a visit and wine tasting at Domaine des Bosquets, where you’ll discover the rich flavors and craftsmanship of their wines.

After your tasting, continue your journey with a 25-minute drive to the historic town of Vaison-la-Romaine. We will break for you to enjoy lunch at in this charming town on your own in one of the recommended restaurants. We will meet back up for a guided visit, where you can explore its Roman ruins and medieval town.

Next you will discover the Beaumes de Venise appellation. Upon arrival, enjoy a scenic walk through the domain with the manager, followed by a tasting at Domaine de Coyeux, known for its exquisite Muscat and robust red wines.

Dinner will also be at Domaine de Coyeux tonight, where the exceptional wines will complement the meal, offering a perfect end to your day.

 

Day 7 – May 24, 2025
Discover Avignon and Roussillon

Begin your morning with a visit of the Popes’ Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through its vast halls and majestic chambers, stepping back in time to the 14th century when it served as the residence of the popes.

From the Palace to the market, your guide will accompany you to Les Halles, a vibrant market where you can sample the flavors of Provence.

Drive to Roussillon, a picturesque village renowned for its vibrant ochre cliffs and charming streets. As you approach, marvel at the striking red and orange hues that paint the landscape. Discover the unique ochre quarries and learn about the history of ochre mining in the region.

Lunch in Roussillon will be on your own in one of the recommended restaurants with time for some independent strolling as well. We’ll arrive back to Avignon for free time in the city or relaxing in the hotel.

We will meet back up this evening for our farewell dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in Avignon.

 

Day 8 – May 25, 2025
End of the Trip

Today our journey ends. After you check-out from your hotel you can either be transferred to the Marseille airport or Avignon train station, if you wish to continue your travels!
